🌸 Dharmabuddhi and Pappabuddhi

Long back in the village of Madhavpur, there used to be two friends, Dharmabuddhi and Pappabuddhi. Dharma-buddi was an honest man with a kind heart. But Pappabuddhi was dishonest and cunning.

Pappabuddhi was very poor and wanted to get rich fast. “I have to find a way to earn money fast,” thought. “I will go to the town and try my luck there.”

But then Pappabuddhi didn’t know how to go about it. So he decided to take Dharmabuddhi along with him.

“My friend,” he told Dharmabuddhi, “What is life without exploring new things? Let us go to the town and try to earn money. When we grow old we will have enough to spend on our children?

Then one fine day, they worshipped the sun god and set forth. With hard work and diligence they earned enough money. After a few years, they decided to return home with their large savings.

As they were nearing the village, Pappabuddhi had a wicked plan in his mind. He told Dharmabuddhi, “It won’t be wise to take the entire amount home.

“If people come to know about it, it will surely be stolen. I have a better and safer idea. We can bury the money under this big banyan tree and put a mark on the trunk, to recognize it. Whenever the need arises, we can take it from here.”

Dharmabuddhi agreed.

They did as they planned and headed for their home. Time passed by and they lived happily.

However Pappabuddhi’s mind was all the time occupied with the buried treasure. One night he went to the banyan tree alone and took away the entire treasure.

After a few days, both the friends set off for the woods to get some money. When they dug up they found the container empty.

“How could you do this?” Pappabuddhi blamed the innocent Dharmabuddhi, “I knew you had an eye on my money! You give my share or else, take you to the court.”

Dharmabuddhi was shocked. “My friend, trust me! I have no clue where our money has gone. You can’t accuse me like that.”

Unable to settle their dispute, they went to the court. The judge asked, “Do either of you have any witness?’

“Yes sir!” replied Pappabuddhi promptly, “The forest god will serve as my witness.”

Dharmabuddhi understood that Pappabuddhi had planned something wicked.

The next morning, Pappabuddhi along with Dharmabuddhi and the judges, went to the forest, Reaching the banyan tree, the judges asked, “Oh the god of the forest, you are the only witness who can solve this case. Reveal to us who the thief is so that we may punish him.”

Pappabuddhi’s father who was hiding in the trunk promptly replied, “Dharmabuddhi is the thief.”

The judges were shocked. They decided to punish him. Dharmabuddhi was surprised at the Injustice done to him. He had his doubt and while judges were discussing among themselves, Dharmabuddhi set the banyan tree on fire.

Unable to bear the heat and smoke, Pappabuddhi’s father jumped out of the trunk.

The judges were astonished to see him. “Who are you and what were you doing there?” the judges asked.

Pappabuddhi’s father confessed his son’s wicked plot and accepted his son’s guilt. Pappabuddhi was given his punishment and the judges praised Dharmabuddhi.

🌸Emi and the Owl

Emi, a king-swan, lived by a lake in a dense forest. He spent his time looking for food and swimming in the clear blue and cool water of the lake. One day as it happens to all who are old, Death came to visit Emi in the guise of an owl. Emi saw the owl and enquired, “Oh wise one, what brings you to this dense forest ? Where do you come from?”

The owl replied. “Emi, I am here to meet you whose virtue I have heard of in my land.”

“You are welcome, 0 wise one, to stay with me by this beautiful lake as long as you feel like,” said Emi.

Thus Emi and the owl became best friends and spent their days together by the beautiful lakeside.

Then, one day, the owl addressed Emi, “Dear friend, I must now leave for my home in Lotus Grove. Do pay me a visit whenever you desire.” Saying this the owl left for his homeland.

After a few days Emi started feeling the absence of his friend, the owl. He thought to himself, “Now that I have grown old I realize I have not seen any place but this lakeside in this forest. I must see the world before I grow too old to move. I shall visit my friend, the owl, in Lotus Grove to start with. I am missing him terribly.” The next morning, Emi, the king-swan, flew to Lotus Grove to meet the owl. He looked for the owl everywhere but in vain. Soon he saw him in a tree hole. The owl was resting there as owls do in daytime, for all owls are blind by daytime. Emi called out, “dear owl, here I am Emi, your friend. Do come out to meet me.”

“Dear Emi, I am glad you have come but I shall meet you at sunset I can only see in the dark,” replied the owl.

At sunset the owl and the king-swan met each other and had a hearty meal and took account of their time apart. The weary swan then slept at the foot of the tree.

Unknown to the two friends, a caravan of gypsies had camped near by. At the break of dawn, the leader of the gypsies blew a conch-shell to rouse his sleepy friends. The owl replied to the conch-call with a harsh and loud owl-call — a piercing hoot. The owl flew away from its tree hole even as Emi was enjoying a sound sleep.

At the inauspicious owl-call the leader ordered the culprit to be shot down by an arrow. An expert archer, who could shoot an arrow at the source of a sound, soon drew and shot an arrow at the tree. The old king-swan who was sleeping there was hit by the arrow. Thus his end came by the inevitable visit of Death in the guise of the owl.

🌸The Brahman’s Calves

Once a poor Brahman lived in a village. He performed small religious ceremonies for the rich and was paid food and clothings in return. As he grew old and feeble, he was not able to attend to many ceremonies and soon he became ill due to starvation. A rich merchant for whom he had performed a holy sacrifice remembered him and presented the Brahman with two calves. The calves were fed on the gross from the field behind the Brahman’s hut. Soon the calves grew up and yielded much milk. The brahman drank the milk to stay healthy and sold butter, curds and cheese made from the milk as his livelihood.

One day, a thief saw the two beautiful and healthy cows. He thought, “If I steal those cows I can keep one for myself and sell the other in the market. Then I will get some cash and a means of constant flow of money all my life.

So the thief hid behind a thick tree near the Brahman’s house and waited for nightfall to steal the cows.

A Ghost had come to dwell on that tree. He used to feed once a week. He had seen the Brahman who had grown healthy on the milk he fed on. This week the Ghost had decided to have him for his weekly feast. He too waited for the dark to pounce on the Brahman.

At midnight the Brahman was fast asleep. In the pitch dark night the thief approached the cowshed and there he saw an ugly and frightening creature yellow in appearance.

“Who are you?” the thief enquired.

“I am a Ghost who has come to kill and feed on the Brahman and what brings you here in the middle of the night?”

The thief answered, “Oh! I am here to steal the Brahman’s cows. So, I understand we two are on the same side.”

Then, the thief grew thoughtful and said, “You must let me first steal the cows before you kill the Brahman.”

“Why, that would be utterly foolish,” said the Ghost. ‘The racket you’ll create will disturb the Brahman’s sleep and he will wake up, so you must allow me to kill the Brahman first.”

Then a fierce argument ensued with each of them saying “Me first! Me first!” The commotion woke the Brahman. He approached both of them and asked what the argument was about.

At this the thief said, “He is a Ghost and he wishes to eat you up.”

Promptly the Ghost butted in, “He is a thief and he intends to steal your cows?

The clever Brahman understood the situation well. He quickly muttered a prayer on hearing which the Ghost fled from the place. Then the Brahman picked up a heavy club and as he raised it to hit the thief, he ran away to save his skin.

🌸The Brahmin and the Crooks

In a village, there lived a poor Brahmin priest. He was pious, dutiful and very superstitious.

One day, the Brahmin left for a neighbouring Village to collect a gift that he had been promised from a rich landlord. Finishing his job in the neighbouring village, he was on his way back carrying his gift-a fat and healthy goat on his shoulders.

Three hungry crooks crossed his path. They saw the healthy goat on the Brahmin’s shoulders and whispered, “That is a very plump goat. Let us trick the Brahmin and take the goat away. We can then make a tasty dish out of it”

They soon made a plan. The three of them went in separate ways.

The first one stopped the Brahmin and exclaimed in horror, “Oh my god! Such a respected priest and carrying a dog on his shoulders? Don’t you know that it is a sin to touch a dog, or a rooster, or a donkey?”

The Brahmin lost his temper. “You stupid fellow, are you blind? Can’t you see it is a goat, not a dog?”

“Don’t be angry,” replied the first crook. “If you think it is not a dog, then please carry on. But isn’t it ridiculous that you are carrying a dog?”

The Brahmin hardly walked a few more yards when the second crook stopped the Brahmin and looked at him in shock.

`How can a reputed priest like you carry a dead calf on the shoulder?” exclaimed the crook.

The Brahmin yelled, “Are you blind too? This is a healthy and live goat and you say he is a dead calf. You are an ignorant fool!”

“All right, sir,” said the second crook. “Please forgive me. Do as you please.”

“What’s wrong with everyone?” wondered the furious Brahmin as he hurried towards his home. “The whole world has gone mad?”

Now it was the turn of the third crook to the Brahmin’s path. “Sir, why are you carrying a donkey on your shoulders? It is going to bring you misfortune.”

Now the Brahmin was confused. Three people have said that the goat was something else. “Have I been given a ghost that keeps changing into a dog, a dead calf or a donkey!” he wondered. “I don’t want this creature.”

“Before it turns into something else, I better get rid of it.” Confused and scared, he threw the goat to the ground and took to his heels.

Coming out of their hiding place, the crooks took the goat and laughed at the stupidity of the Brahmin. Listening to others blindly, he got duped.

🌸The clever Rabbit and the Elephant

A herd of elephants lived in a forest. They fed on the leaves of the wild trees and drank the cool water from the stream that flowed through the forest. One year, drought hit the area where the forest was located. Many animals fled the forest to other places which had no lack of water or food. The leader of the elephants was worried. He was called Iravat and he took good care of his herd. He sent his brothers to look for water. After a long search, they located a lake at the far end of the forest. They decided to quench their thirst and take their baths there very morning.

Now, everyday the herd would go to the lake to bathe and drink the sweet water of the lake. On the way, they would pass a colony of rabbits. They would not pay attention to rabbits on the ground. So, everyday some rabbits would be injured or crushed to death. As their number grew less, the leader of the rabbits called a meeting.

“Dear brothers and sisters,” he addressed his fellow companions, “We are all aware of how we are being killed by the unthinking elephants everyday. We must think of a way to save ourselves.”

Mikkoo was a young and intelligent rabbit. He said, “Sir, don’t worry. go as your messenger and ask the elephants to change the path they take to the lake.”

So with the leader’s permission Mikkoo went as a messenger. He spotted the elephant herd approaching and stood on the top of a large, high rock to save himself.

When the Iravat, the elephant leader came near, he said, “Respected sir, I am Mikkoo, a messenger from the Moon himself. The almighty Moon has sent mc to you with a private message, so please step aside.”

When Iravat came near, Mikkoo said, ‘The lake where you go to bathe and quench your thirst belongs to the Moon. He is very upset as you crush many rabbits on the way. As we are his close friends and guides, our sad plight has saddened and angered the Moon. He wishes to speak to you privately. If you would be kind enough I will escort you to the lake of the Moon for a meeting.”

iravat readily agreed for the meeting. When Iravat and Mikkoo reached the lake, the Moon was reflected in its still water.

“let me offer my greetings to the moon,” said Iravat and just as he dipped his trunk in the lake thewater stirred and so did the Moon’s reflection.

“Oh! See how the mighty Moon shakes in anger,” said Mikkoo.

But why is it so?” asked Iravat.

“You have angered him even more by touching the holy water of the lake at night,” replied Shweta.

At this Iravat said in a mournful voice, “Please ask the Moon to forgive us. We shall never come again to this lake nor we will ever harm the rabbits, loved so much by the Moon.”

Thus Iravat left with a promise never to visit the lake of the Moon and the rabbits lived safely and happily ever after.

🌸A Perfect Person

A man and his girlfriend were married. It was a large celebration.

All of their friends and family came to see the lovely ceremony. The bride was gorgeous in her white wedding gown and the groom was very dashing in his black suit.

Everyone could tell that the love they had for each other was true.

A few months later, the wife comes to the husband with a proposal:

“I read in a magazine, a while ago, about how we can strengthen our marriage.” she offered. “Each of us will write a list of the things that we find a bit annoying with the other person. Then, we can talk about how we can fix them together and make our lives happier together.”

The husband agreed, so each of them went to a separate room

in the house and thought of the things that annoyed them about the other.

They thought about this question for the rest of the day and wrote down what they came up with.

The next morning, at the breakfast table, they decided that they would go over their lists.

“I’ll start,” offered the wife. She took out her list.

It had many items on it enough to fill 3 pages, in fact. As she started reading thelist of the little annoyances, she noticed that tears were starting to appear in her husband’s eyes. “What’s wrong?” she asked.

“Nothing” the husband replied, “keep reading your lists.”The wife continued to read until she had read all three pages to her husband. She neatly placed her list on the table and folded her hands over top of it.

“Now, you read your list and then we’ll talk about the things on both of our lists.” She said happily.

Quietly the husband stated,

“I don’t have anything on my list. I think that you are perfect the way that you are. I don’t want you to change anything for me. You are lovely and wonderful and I wouldn’t want to try and change anything about you.”

The wife, touched by his honesty and the depth of his love for her and his acceptance of her, turned her head and wept.

🌸The Day Dreamer

In a small village there lived a lazy Brahmin Ramdas. He would do nothing but daydream whole day. Whenever he was hungry, he would out, beg for food, come back and laze.

One sunny afternoon, Ramdas was very hungry. With great difficulty, he got up and stretched his arms. Stepping out of his hut, he exclaimed, “What a beautiful day. How I wish I could go back to sleep. But then, I will have to go out and get my food.”

After bathing, Ramdas took out a bowl and out to beg.

“Knock! Knock! Is anybody at home?”

“Who is there?”

“Give me something to eat, good lady of the house and God will fulfill all your dreams!”

By begging the whole day he managed to get a pot full of milk. He hung this pot on the ceiling above, lay down on his bed and started day dreaming again.

“It is this pot of milk that is going to make me rich,” he thought. “I will churn the curds and make butter. From the butter, I will be able to make ghee. I really am clever!”

“I will then go to the market and sell the ghee ” his dream continued. “With the money I get, I will buy a pair of goats. They will have kids after six months. Soon I would have an entire herd of goats.”

“Then I will continue my business. I will barter the goats for cattle. I will buy some more cows and own a farmhouse. I will start a dairy farm. Once I earn a handsome amount I will employ people in my farm. I can also open a sweet shop in the middle of the village. I will make sweets out of the cow’s milk.” The Brahmin kept smiling to himself.

“How smart I am,” he thought. “The day I become a rich businessman I will build a big house right in the middle of the village. There will be a splendid garden and a swimming pool in front of the house. Early morning I will bathe in the blue waters of the pool. Seeing such a lavish lifestyle, the village headman will come to my house and plead for my hand for his beautiful daughter.” “After I get married,” Ramdas continued dreaming. “I’ll make her work throughout the day.

If she fights with me, I will jump up and give her a kick!”

Engrossed in his thoughts, he struck out with his foot, breaking the pot, and drenched himself with the milk.

He saw the broken pot and cried. He lost whatever he had because of his laziness and day dreaming.

🌸The Enemy’s Advice

It is well known that crabs and herons have been enemies since ages but sometimes grief and sudden loss does affect one’s power of thinking wisely. Thus, a heron fell prey to a crab’s wicked trick.

A heron once stood by a lake with a grim face. From a distance a crab had been watching him for along. So he enquired.

“Dear Uncle, what ails you so see you are very sad and grief-stricken today?”

“Dear, Dear, what do I tell you?” cried the heron. “We have been living happily on the nearby tree for years. All our previous generations have grown up on it but alas there would be no more herons on this tree I”

“Why is it so, Uncle Ps questioned the crab.

“It is because a snake has come to live in the tree-hole and he eats up our chicks each time they hatch. I have no way of getting rid of the devil.”

“Uncle, I have a remedy for you,” suggested the crab. “A mongoose lives in a hole on a nearby tree. All you have to do is put a trail of fresh fish from the mongoose’s hole to the snake’s tree-hole. The mongoose will follow the trail feeding on the fish and when he reaches the snake’s hole they will surely fight. The snake will be killed by the mongoose and you would be free from all troubles.”

The heron thanked the crab profusely for his advice and soon set out to carry out the plan.

The plan did work but after killing the snake the mongoose ate up the heron’s chicks too.

🌸The Farmer’s Wife

A poor and old farmer lived in a village. He had a beautiful and young wife.. The young wife always yearned to enjoy life by going to fairs and by spending a lot of money on finery. But due to his old age arid feeble health, the old farmer hardly left his house and did not earn more than that which was necessary. So the young wife often felt sad. The couple often fought each other.

One day, a rogue overheard their quarrel and saw the young wife running out of the house in tears. He followed her and then approached her to talk.

“Dear, I overheard your quarrel with your old husband. You are very beautiful and young and the old man cannot fulfil your desires for fun and finery. I am a widower looking for a wife. I have a lot of money but no one to spend it on. So, why don’t you leave the old man and accompany me to the city ? We will start a new, blissful life

together ?”

To his suggestion, the young wife readily agreed. That night she gathered all her fine clothes and a substantial amount of jewellery and money and left with the rogue for the city.

Early next morning, they reached a river on the outskirts the city. Then the rogue addressed the young woman:

“Dear, please stay here on this bank while I swim to the other side and arrange for a boat to get you across. Hand over your jewellery and money to me, for seeing you alone, some bandit may try to take it away from you.”

The young woman handed over the parcel of jewellery and money to the rogue and he left her on the river bank. The rogue had got what he wanted so he did not come back.

Now, it was noon but there was no sign of the rogue and the young woman grew impatient as she sat waiting by the riverside. Just then a jackal came to the river bank with a large chunk of meat in his mouth. He spotted a large fish in the river water and in the greed of catching the fish he dropped the meat on the river bank. A hawk promptly swooped on the meat and flew away. The hawk’s movement alerted the fish and it too fled to the river bed. Thus, the jackal was left with nothing to eat.

Seeing this the young wife laughed and said, “You fool, now you have neither the fish nor the meat to fill

your hungry stomach.”

At this the Jackal sneered at the young woman and said, “I am no different than you, for you have lost more than me.”

“How is that?” enquired the perplexed woman.

“You have lost your husband, your lover and your money. No one is as pitiable as you.”

🌸The Foolish Donkey

Simha, the Lion King, had grown old and feeble. Even in such a state he once fought an elephant and

sustained deep wounds all over his body. His faithful minister Chaturath, the Jackal, was by his side all

the time. Since Simha always gave the leftovers of his hunt to Chaturath, his inability to hunt for food

and the lack of proper food had rendered Chaturath weak. Chaturath addressed Simha,” “My Lord, I have

been hungry for days and my dry throat is troubling me, so I can hardly drag myself around,. Do something

for our food.

At this Simha said, “0 wise one, use your wisdom to trap an animal which I can hunt even in my feeble state.”

Chaturath set out for the nearby village where he spotted Gardabh, the washerman’s donkey.

“Uncle Gardabh, what a sorry state you are in,” said Chaturath. “I see bones sticking out of your body.

Are you not well?”

“Dear nephew,” replied Gardabh, “the washerman loads my back with heavy loads and gives me rioting

to eat. I am living on this dry grass and thorny bushes.”

“I did not know of your pitiable condition. If you shall come with me I will lead you to a grass field

near the forest. The lush green grass there would soon turn you into a vigorous, healthy youth”, the

wily jackal enticed Gardabh. At this Gardabh hesitated and then agreed. Soon Chaturath played

his last card, “What’s more there are three she- donkeys who live in the grassfields. They have grown

strong and healthy feeding on the luscious grass and now wish to marry a donkey from the village. So I am

here for the same purpose.”

This was enough to entice Gardabh, He happily followed Chaturath to the forest with dreams of

emerald green grass and beautiful brides she donkeys.

When Simha saw Chaturath guiding Gardabh to him, his hunger could not withstand it. He jumped

at Gardabh with full force and haste. His hasty jump made him plunge over the donkey’s back to the other

side. Gardabh was terrified at the sound of Simha’s fall and was even more horrified at his looks. He soon

ran away leaving Chaturath in a puzzled state.

“My Lord, impatience is no virtue. Now you have scared away a good catch. I will bring him back but please control yourself before you jump.” So saying this Chaturath left for renewed enticement for Gardabh.

On seeing Chaturath, Gardabh, exclaimed, “A fine grass-field you led me to and what was that ferocious and large creature I saw?”

`Oh, that was one of the she-donkeys who has grown healthy eating the delicious green grags. She had only attempted to embrace you and you ran away in panic. Now she has vowed to marry only you or she will fast till death.

This time Simha was ready to jump at Gardabh ccurately and his sharp claws and teeth killed the foolish donkey immediately.

Having killed Gardabh Simha felt like having a wash in the nearby stream before settling to a hearty meal. In his absence* Chaturath ate Gardabh’s ears and heart. On his return Simha was enraged to see the dead donkey with his missing ears and no heart. As he accused Chaturath of partaking of his hunt without his permission, Chaturath said, “My Lord, Gardabh was born with no ears nor any heart. That is why he came here, saw you with his own eyes, ran away in panic yet returned to meet his end.”

Simha was convinced by Chaturath’s argument and proceeded to have his meal.

Once in a dense forest lived four friends. The first was Mooshak, a mouse; the second Kak, a crow; the third Mantharak, a tortoise and the fourth Harini, a doe. The four friends used to meet every morning sharing jokes and discussing various matters.

One morning, Mooshak, Kak and Mantharak sat by the lake side waiting for Harini. She was late and they were getting worried.

Mantharak said, “Dear Kak, it is very late now, almost noon. Why don’t you fly around and locate Harini. I fear she is not in some danger?”

Kok promptly took flight and while flying he spotted Harini trapped in a hunter’s net.

“Oh dear Harini!”, exclaimed Kak, “Mantharak was right. Here you are trapped in the net while we waited for you.”

“Dear Kak, do find some help and set me free,” cried Harini.

Kak flew back to his friends and told of Harini’s plight. After thinking for some time Mantharak said, “Well, Kak, why not take Mooshak with you? He will gnaw at the hunter’s net and surely Harini would be free to join us.”

That is right”, agreed Mooshak but in a grim voice he said. “How can I reach such a long way off quickly before the hunter’s arrival?”

“Dont worry”, said Kak, “for I will carry you on my back.”

So Mooshak hopped on Kak’s back and Kak flew him to Harini. Mooshak promptly set to cutting the net and soon Harini was free. By that time Mantharak, the tortoise, had reached the spot crawling slowly.

Just as the friends embraced each other joyfully they heard the hunter’s approaching footsteps. Harini hid behind a. bush, Mooshak jumped into a treehole and Kak flew up to a tree. Mantharak scrambled towards a rock to hide beneath it.

The hunter saw his damaged net and exclaimed, “Oh the doe has escaped and my net is torn too. Oh ! what is this—a fat turtle—better take this than the doe for at least I will not be hungry.”

Thus, the hunter picked up the slow-moving tortoise and put it in his bag. Now Mooshak, Kak and Harini were worried about setting Mantharak free. They quickly made a plan. .

At a distance, the hunter again spotted Harini chewing on lush green. He thought, “What luck ! A tortoise and the deer too for dinner tonight.” So saying he dropped his bag and went to catch Harini. But Harini was a fast runner and she led him far away.

Meanwhile, Mooshak cut open the hunter’s bag and Mantharak was set free. As soon as Mantharak was safely hidden beneath a rock and Mooshak was in the tree-hole, Kak flew to Harini.

Harini bound away fast and the hunter, tired as he was decided to return to his small catch, the tortoise.

But was ! when he returned he found no tortoise and he had no doe for dinner either.

He called the barber and said, “Here, take these two gold coins for yourself. Do not mention what you saw to anyone.” So saying he bid the barber a farewell.

The barber, greedy as he was and foolish too, thought, “If I can get some monks to visit me and I treat them the way Rajrath did then I too would become a wealthy man.” Little did he know about Rajrath’s dream.

The next day the barber rose early had a bath and in a pious mood visited the monastery. He went to the High Priest and said, “Sir, please pay me a visit with your disciples so that I can serve you with delicious food and receive your blessings.”

“You fool,” said the enraged Priest, “don’t you know that we do not go to people’s houses for food ? We have given up the luxuries of life.”

“But Sir, it was only a way to get you to visit me for I have some rare, holy manuscripts that I would give to the monastery. I shall also provide wrappings for the manuscripts which you have,” requested the barber.

Though the High Priest declined, some monks decided to visit the barber, enticed by the wrappings for their manuscripts. As soon as they entered the barber’s house the barber hit each of them on the head with a heavy cudgel. Soon all the monks lay moaning inflicted with head injuries. A passer-by who saw the sight in the barber’s courtyard informed the king’s soldiers who arrested the barber.

When the king enquired from the barber about the incident, he proceeded to narrate what he had witnessed at Rajrath’s house. Soon Rajrath too was summoned and was asked to present his story. Hearing the whole case the wise king commented.

🌸The Balloon

Once there lived a little boy in a city. His name was Karan. He was very fond of playing with gas-filled balloons.

One day he was playing with his friends. They laid a bet. Each of them claimed that his balloon would go the highest in the sky. Karan purchased a blue colour balloon, thinking that it would travel the highest, since the sky was also blue.

At a given signal, each of them let go of their balloons. All the balloons started going up in the sky. But Karan was disappointed to see that his balloon did not go the highest. He returned home with a heavy heart.

The next day, the children laid another bet. Karan now thought of buying a red colour balloon because the previous day it was the red colour balloon that had gone up the highest.

When they all let go of their balloons, Karan was again disappointed, as his balloon did not travel the highest. He came back home in a sad mood.

On the third day, the children were playing the same game. Karan badly wanted to win this time. But he was confused. He didn’t know what colour of balloon to purchase. He didn’t know which would go highest.

Karan was puzzled; he approached the balloon seller. Unable to decide, Karan asked the balloon seller, “Tell me please, which balloon will go the highest in the sky? Is it the red, the yellow, the green or the blue one?”

The balloon seller smiled at Karan and said, “My dear child! It is not the colour of the balloon that decides how high it will go in the sky. What matters the most is what the balloon has inside it. The balloon, which is filled with more gas, and that too with the lightest gas, rises the highest.”

The balloon seller then gave Karan the balloon that had more gas than the other balloons. That day Karan won the game and came home with a smile on his face.

🌸The Mouse Which Believed In Itself

One day a group of mice were playing in a jungle, when two of them fell into a pit full of water. The two mice didn’t know how to swim, so they began to jump in order to come out.
All the young mice gathered around the pit to watch what was happening. On seeing the two mice jumping for their lives, the naughty mice started clapping. The other mice started shouting, “Hey, you fools, you can never come out. The pit is very deep. Both of you are going to die soon.”
The two mice ignored the comments, and tried to jump up out of the pit. The other mice kept shouting, telling them to stop trying. Finally, one of the mice took its head out of water to hear what the other mice were saying. On hearing the crowd, he got discouraged and gave up. He sank further into the water, and within no time, died.
The other mouse kept jumping as hard as he could. The crowd of mice kept telling him to stop trying, as it was futile. But, the mouse jumped even harder and finally made it out.
When the mouse came out, the other mice wondered how he had survived. Why did he keep jumping, despite their discouragement? To their surprise they found that the second mouse was deaf, and could not hear their negative comments.
When the other mice were clapping and shouting at the two mice, the second mouse thought that they were encouraging him to try further to save himself. It was the positive belief of the second mouse that saved his life.

🌸The Wise Owl

A large group of owls came to settle in a jungle. The jungle was full of green and lively trees. They were free to pick a tree of their choice to build their homes.
The young owls chose a green and well-built tree for themselves. There was an old owl in their group, who was forced by others to choose an old and half-dead tree. The old owl had to remain satisfied with his share.
Days went by. The young owls would often feel proud at their selection of trees and would tease the old owl,” Oh, you poor guy! You could not find a lively and green tree. You have got a dry and half-dead tree. You are very unlucky indeed.” But the old owl was wise. He would silently smile at their remarks. At times lie would reply, “Who knows whether you are lucky or I am lucky!” The young owls would, however, merely laugh at him.
One day, a large number of woodcutters came to the jungle in search of wood. The lively and green trees fascinated them. So, they started felling them with their sharp axes.
The young owls all started malting a loud noise when they saw their homes getting destroyed. But, they could not do anything and kept watching helplessly.
When the woodcutters looked at the old and half-dead tree, they said, “Oh! This is a dry tree. It is of no use to us, as it won’t provide us enough wood. Why waste our time on it?” So, they went away, leaving the old and half- dead tree untouched.
The old owl’s nest was spared.

🌸People – Good and Bad

There lived a villager. He made his living by selling seeds in the market. He had ten bags with him, which he would carry to another village to buy the seeds.
Of the ten bags, one was different from the rest. It had many holes and was torn at a few places. But, despite its poor condition, the villager would carry it regularly together with all other bags to get the seeds from another village.
One fine day, the torn bag started thinking, “I am but a torn bag. I have so many holes. I don’t understand why my master takes me along for bringing seeds. Why doesn’t he throw me out?” He decided to ask the villager.
“O my master, why don’t you just throw me away? You know I am no use. I don’t serve you honestly. I spill all the seeds you fill in me, all along the way. By the time you reach home I have no seeds left to offer you. Please, may I know why you don’t do away with me?” asked the bag.
The villager patiently listened to the torn bag. Then, he smiled and said, “My dear bag, who told you that you are bad? You don’t know how good you are! Come, I will tell you what good you have done to me, and to others as well.”
So saying, the villager took the torn bag into his arms and took it outside to show it something. The villager then said, “Do you see all these trees? These trees are there all along the way from this village to the next, from where I buy seeds. These trees have grown from the seeds you have been spilling along the way for so many years.”
The villager then paused for a second and continued, “These trees give a cool shade to the tired passers-by on hot sunny days. They also give oxygen to living beings and fruits to birds, animals and humans. Can’t you see of what great service you have been to the world?! ”
The torn bag was happy to learn all this. It had realized that everyone everywhere had something good to offer the world!

But as the high summer approached the marsh began to dry up. And to ! it was all dry in a few days. So, the frogs were compelled to say good-bye to it. Looking for a new shelter for themselves, the frogs reached a deep well. They sat on its edge and looked inside. It had a lot of water in it.

One of the frogs was so overjoyed to see the water that he at once said, “This well looks quite a fit place for us to live. It will be cool and safe inside it. Let’s jump in to settle there.”

But the other frog was far wiser. He replied, ” Not so soon, my friend ! we left the marsh when it had dried up. So, first think how we shall come out of this well if it goes dry.”

🌸The Generous Snake

Bhola, a Brahmin lived in a village. He ploughed his field everyday but the land did not yield anything. He still kept ploughing the unproductive land.

One summer afternoon he sat to rest under a shady mango tree. He glanced at the far side of the field. To his amazement he saw a snake with a raised hood sitting upon an anthill that was the edge of his field. Bhola ran home and fetched milk from his home. He offered the milk in a saucer to the snake and said, “Surely, you are the guardian deity of my land. My inattentiveness has angered you and thus you have rendered my field unproductive. Please accept this offering. Saying this Bhoia left the saucer of milk near the anthill.

The next morning Bhola returned to the field, To his utter surprise and delight he found a shining gold coin which glittered in the saucer. He picked up the glittering coin and took it home. Thus every day Bhola brought milk for the snake and received a gold coin the next day.

One day Bhola left for an odd job in the nearby city. He asked his son to take the saucer of milk to the anthill. The next day Bhola’s son saw the glittering piece of gold in the saucer. Bhola’s son observed the same thing on the following day. He thought to himself.’ “If a single coin appears every day, it surely means that the anthill has a horde of such gold coins which is guarded by this snake. I will kill the snake and get all the coins at once.” So saying he proceeded to break down the anthill with a thick and strong stick. The snake escaped to save his life. Even the constant beating from the stick did not do much harm to the snake. In anger the snake struck his sharp and poisonous fangs into the boy’s hand. 🌸The Hermit And The Mouse

Long time ago, in the jungle of Malkand, there lived a hermit named Shalakya. Everyday at dawn he would take a dip in the holy Ganges, chant mantras, and worship God.

One evening when he was sitting near the banks of Ganges, he saw a small mouse hiding from the piercing eyes of a hawk. “Oh poor mouse! If I don’t take it along with me, the hawk would carry it off.”

So, Shalakya took the mouse to his hermitage.

“I will change this mouse to a girl,” he thought. “Then she would stay with me as my daughter, and look after me.” He transformed the mouse to a girl. He named her Apsara. With the passing years, she became a beautiful damsel. She took care of the hermit, brought flowers from the forest, and arranged for the puja. Shalakya decided to look for a groom for Apsara. Seeing the radiant beauty of Apsara, the hermit thought the Sun God would be the perfect match for her. He invited the Sun God with his spiritual powers.

The Sun God was spellbound by her beauty. “Ah! Beautiful maiden, would you like to marry me?” he proposed.

“I cannot marry you,” said. Apsara. “Your heat would be unbearable for me.”

The hermit then asked the Sun God, “Is there anybody more powerful than you; who would be worthy of my daughter?”

“The Cloud would make a better pair with Apsara,” he replied. “He can overcast me with his power.”

Then the hermit invoked the Cloud.

“The Cloud is like a vagabond!” said Apsara. “So I am not willing to marry him also.”

The cloud advised, “Mountain is more powerful than me. It can block my way.”

Now Shalakya invoked the mountain.

Apsara expressed her unwillingness. “The mountain is too heavy! I will be crushed under his weight!”

The mountain said, “The mouse would be the ideal match for you. He can dig up holes through me.”

Then sillakya called a mouse.

Apsara was delighted to see the mouse and thought it to be the perfect match for her. Seeing the glow on Apsara’s face the hermit transformed Apsara to a mouse.

Amelia looked at him and sobbed. She said, “My lovely frock is torn. I am very sad.”

The Spider smiled and said, “Look at me! I work so hard in weaving my web. It takes hours and hours to create my home and only a second for it to be destroyed. I had made my home only yesterday. It was ashed away by your maid this morning. I was also very sad. Then I thought that instead of being sad, I should start weaving my home, again. So, don’t cry now. Mend your frock, instead. One day, a young crab came out of the water and strayed far into a meadow. The meadow was full of green grass and apparently looked a good place to live in.

Little did the crab know that it could be dangerous for him to stay in the meadow for long. So, he stayed on with a view to settling there.

Just then a hungry fox passed that way. Seeing the crab, the fox moved up to it and caught it in his mouth.

🌸Believe In Yourself

Two cockroaches lived in a house. Both of them were young and full of energy. Each day, they would run, jump and chase each other while playing. Though they were equally strong, there was a difference. One cockroach was optimistic and always lived in hope, while the other was pessimistic and lived in despair.

One day, while playing, both cockroaches fell into a pot of milk. They swam around and tried to hop out, but, as there was no solid support under their feet, it was not possible for the cockroaches to hop out and escape from the pot.

After some struggle, the pessimistic cockroach said. to itself, “It is impossible to hop out. No doubt, I have strength but I can’t swim very long. I am already tired.” Thinking thus, the cockroach did become tired soon and could not swim any longer. It gave up its struggle and went down to the bottom of the pot. Finally, it was drowned.

On the other hand, the optimistic cockroach kept on struggling, saying to itself, “No doubt, it seems difficult but who knows! Maybe some miracle will occur. If I try a little longer, something good might happen. It is a question of only a few minutes more and then I will be out of here.”

Hoping for a miracle to happen, the second cockroach went on swimming. His constant leg movements churned the milk and turned it into a huge heap butter. Soon the cockroach was able to climb up the heap of butter and hopped out of the pot.

In a forest an eagle lived on a tree. It had built a nest wherein to lay its eggs. There the eagle would hatch its eggs all through the day.

Under the same tree there lived a hen. The hen had also laid eggs during the same period when the eagle had laid its eggs.

One day, while the eagle had gone for hunting, a bear climbed up the tree to eat the eagle’s eggs. The bear had finished three of the eggs when the fourth one slipped off its hands and fell into the hen’s nest. On returning, the eagle could not find her eggs. Feeling terribly upset, she decided to leave the place.

The hen which lived under the tree saw the eagle’s egg by the side of her eggs. She felt eggs pity on the eagle’s egg, and decided to hatch it too. After a few days, the hen’s chicks hatched. The eagle’s chick hatched, too.

The young chicks would listen to their mother’s sounds and try to imitate her. The eagle’s chick also picked up the hen’s sounds. The chicks would all play together and make lots of noise.

🌸When Villagers Saw the Heavens

There lived a fool in a village, whose name as Alas. Alas would do some foolish act every now and then, and, as a result suffer. Occasionally, he would break his leg or hurt

himself on account of his foolish deeds. One day, Alas pierced needles in both his eyes. As a result he became blind and was unable to see anything around. Soon he realized that he had once again performed a foolish act. He was now afraid that people would laugh at him and ridicule his folly. His mind began churning — “What shall I tell other people?” Very soon, he got an idea.
Next morning, unable to see anything, he was passing through the lanes holding a stick in his hand. Suddenly he was surrounded by a lot of people. ‘Alas, what happened, what happened?” everyone was questioning him.

An old person asked him, ‘Alas, have you become blind? Why are you moving with a stick in your hand?”

Alas, who was ready to answer the question, replied, “Oh, you see, I pierced needles in my eyes. It is not that I have become blind; now I can see the Heavens.”

“The Heavens? Now how is that possible,” asked someone from the crowd.

“Yes, I can see the Heavens now! Piercing needles through my eyes has given me that power,” came the reply from Alas.

People didn’t believe Alas. But, everyday Alas kept repeating the same words in order to avoid ridicule.

After a few days, a certain person began thinking, “Maybe, Alas is speaking the truth. What’s wrong in taking a chance? If I can also see the Heavens, it will be wonderful.”

So, he too pierced needles through his eyes and became blind. Unable to see the Heavens (and other things as well), the poor villager was terribly shocked. He immediately went to Alas and asked him, “Hey, you told me that if I pierce needles through my eyes, I will be able to see the Heavens. But, on the contrary, I can’t even see anything around me. What does all this mean?”

Alas replied smilingly, “My dear friend, you have become blind now. You won’t be able to see anything. But do not tell this to other people. If you do so, they all will laugh at you.

The person became sad on hearing this. After a while he spoke with a heavy heart, “Alas, you lied. You have cheated me. What shall I do now?”

Alas replied, “Now that you have become blind you should not speak the truth because people will laugh at you. So, the only alternative left is that you too can see the Heavens now”

The poor villager, in order to avoid being ridiculed by others, began telling the other villagers that it was a wonderful experience for him to have pierced needles through his eyes. And, he too could see the Heavens now. The poor villager continued, “Alas is a great scholar. He has done me a great favour.”

On listening to him, the villagers were astonished. Gradually, they began believing Alas and the other villager. Soon, others followed and, gradually, all the villagers became blind and kept saying that they too could see the Heavens so that other villagers would not laugh at their foolish act.

πŸ”₯The Tree That Lived For Others

Once upon a time, there were two trees in a forest. They grew side by side and were fast friends. In the course of time, both of them turned into fully-grown trees, laden with fruit.

In the same forest, there lived many birds and other small creatures, all of whom were very fond of eating fruits. They set their eyes on the two trees to feed themselves.

Though the two trees were fast friends, their nature was quite different from each other. One tree was very generous in sharing its fruits with birds and other creatures. It felt happy whenever any bird sat on its branches to enjoy its fruits. The tree would offer its fruits with love to others.

The other tree, being of the opposite nature, was very selfish. It never wanted to share its fruits and hated the birds and all other creatures. The tree used to think: “I have grown these fruits with so much of labour and pain. If I share these fruits with others, I will be left with no fruits. This way, I will cease to grow.” It thus, decided not to share any of its fruits with others.

The birds and other creatures, on seeing the unselfish and generous behaviour of the first tree, started visiting it to feed themselves. They would all come and sit on its branches and chat for hours together, leaving droppings all over, on the leaves and branches, and on the ground.

On seeing this, the selfish tree would laugh at the other tree and say, “What a fool you are! You share your fruits with these silly creatures and they leave droppings, all over you! They make your surroundings dirty. Look at me, I never share any of my fruits, and my surroundings are very clean.”

The generous tree would listen to all this and would just smile in reply. Mouths went by, and gradually, the selfish tree began to wither. Its fruits also reduced in number, day-by-day.the selfish tree was astonished to see what was happening to it. Finally, in a couple of years the selfish trees lost all of its leaves and became thin and weak. It become withered and sick.

The other tree, unselfish as ever, kept growing and bore fruit aplenty. This was because, the birds’ droppings were acting as manure for the tree, which made the tree bigger, healthier and more bountiful, as time passed.

By this time, the second tree had realized that the cause of its plight was its selfishness. It learnt that the other tree was getting much more in return for what it gave to the birds and other creatures. With this realization, the second tree decided to change itself. It soon became unselfish and began inviting birds and other creatures with a smile.

Soon, the birds and all the other creatures were attracted by its affectionate smile, and started sitting on its branches too. Before long, it grew in health and became bountiful like the other tree.

Enjoying its sadistic pleasure the crow followed the mouse for some distance gloating, “Good! Now, don’t ever come back.”

The woodcutters replied, “We need wood to build our houses.”

“But, we have already built our houses in these trees,” came the reply from an old woodpecker.

The woodpecker continued, “If you want to build your houses, and then please do it with bricks and stones. Why are you destroying our houses? Let us all live peacefully, please!”

The woodcutters snapped back rudely, “We don’t care! We will build our houses with wood. And, you can’t stop us!

The woodcutters, then, continued felling the trees. In no time, all the trees were razed to the ground and the woodpeckers rendered homeless. The woodcutters carried the logs with them, and built their homes.

One day, the oldest woodpecker called a meeting and said, “If they have axes, we too have our beaks. We will destroy their houses. If they have made us homeless, we, too, will render them homeless.”

One day, the elephant met an ant. Looking at the ant, the elephant laughed, “What a puny creature you are! You look so weak and tiny! I pity you. Look at me. I am the mightiest animal in the forest. I can do anything in this world.”

The ant listened to the elephant and smiled, without saying a word.

Very soon, dark clouds gathered in the sky. It began to drizzle. The elephant and the ant moved into a nearby cave to take shelter there.

The elephant, looking at the tiny ant, laughed again and said, “Look at my size. I can crush you under my foot. You won’t even know how to save yourself.”

Feeling proud of its size and strength, the elephant started dancing in the cave. Due to the thumping of its heavy feet, a big stone lying atop the cave fell in front of the cave, covering its mouth fully.

The elephant walked proudly towards the stone and tried to move it but could not. It tried with all its might, but all in vain. The elephant could not come out of the cave.

However, the ant, due to its tiny size, easily came out of the cave through a small opening. Now it was the ant’s turn to speak?”Look, you elephant! What I could do, you can’t! On account of your mighty size, you will have to remain in this cave for the rest of your life. What you considered to be your strength has proved to be your greatest problem.

The elephant remained locked up inside the cave and died a painful death.

🌸The Mouse Which Saved the Eagle

In a jungle, there lived an eagle. The eagle had made his nest high up on a tree. At the foot of the tree, a mouse had built his small house.

The eagle had set his eyes on the mouse. One day, while the mouse was playing outside, the eagle swooped down from his nest and picked up the mouse from the earth. Then, he flew high up and returned to his nest.

When the eagle was about to bill the mouse and make a meal of him, the mouse pleaded, “Please spare my life. I want to live, just as you want to live. If you spare me, maybe, someday, I can save your life.”

After listening to the mouse’s pleading, the eagle started laughing, “Oh, what a joke! You tiny creature, how can you save my life?”

The mouse pleaded again, “Please give me a year’s time. If I haven’t saved your life on at least one occasion by then, you can kill me and eat me up.”

Somehow, the eagle was convinced. He dropped the mouse back on to the ground, and flew off in search of food again.

A few months passed. One day, a bird-catcher came to the jungle. The bird-catcher had spread his net where the mouse and the eagle lived.

Very soon, the eagle was caught in the net. He tried hard to free himself but couldn’t. Then, he shouted for help, “Save me please! If someone can hear me, please come and save me.”

The mouse heard the eagle’s cries, and came out running.

The bird-catcher was away for lunch.

The mouse, without wasting any time started cutting up the net with its sharp teeth. Within no time, the eagle was freed.

🌸A Bought Comfort Isn't A Blessing

One winter day, a wild ass was wandering aimlessly about. Suddenly he came to the edge of the forest and saw a donkey lying in the warm sun at full length. Quite care-free as the donkey looked, the wild ass envied him a lot.

Going up to the donkey the wild ass said, “How lucky you are indeed ! Your sleek skin shows how well you live. I am not as lucky as you are. OK ; so long.” Even after leaving the place, the wild ass kept thinking about the donkey.

A few days later, the wild ass came again to see the donkey. But this time the donkey had a heavy load on his back. His master was following him with a rod in hand. Off and on he hit the donkey to keep him moving at a steady pace.

“Ah ! what a miserable life you have ! I no longer envy you. I never knew that you have to buy your comfort at this price,” said the wild ass from a distance and went his way.

🌸 One's Nature Seldom Changes

You may be surprised to know that all ants were human-beings to begin with. They lived by tilling soil and raising crops just as farmers do even now.

But not content with what they got through their labour, these farmers always had their eyes on the crops of their neighbours. Not only this, they even stole their crops whenever they got a chance. Thus they used to add to their own store.

These acts offended the gods a lot and they complained against the thieving farmers to their chief—Jupiter. He was so angry that he changed these farmers into ants.

But though these farmers had changed their form, yet their habit of thieving remained as it had been and it is the same even today. The ants go about corn-fields to gather grains which do not belong to them. Like customs, habits also die very hard.

Once upon a time there was a jackdaw who lived near a farm-house. The owner of the farm had kept some pigeons and he fed them with grains regularly. The jackdaw looked at the pigeons and envied them everyday.

Deciding to share the feed, the jackdaw painted his body like that of a pigeon. Then he joined the pigeons as one of them. Thus he was able to enjoy the feed daily. The pigeons never suspected anything foul. But one day after the feed, the jackdaw could not control himself. He started crying and the pigeons came to know that he was not one of them. They pecked at his body so mercilessly that he began to bleed.

The jackdaw flew away to save his life and went straight . to his own brethren—the jackdaws. But because of his painted body, they refused to own him. So, he was forced to flee in order to save himself. He became a homeless wanderer which he till today is. Never pose to be what you are not.

🌸Most Men Go By Gain, Not By Moral

Once there was a farmer who owned a large garden with a number of fruit-trees. But one apple tree had gone barren. It no longer bore any fruit, though it provided shelter to many birds.

Now, seeing the apple-tree useless, the farmer made up his mind to fell it. He came to the garden with his axe and got ready to cut down the apple-tree.

But the birds living on that tree begged the farmer, “Spare this tree, sir. If you fell it, we shall have to go elsewhere. It will deprive you of our merry notes when you are at work here.”

But the farmer turned a deaf-ear to the plea and struck at the tree with his axe. A few strokes of the axe discovered a hollow in the tree-stem. It had a large honey-comb inside it.

Delighted at his find, the farmer threw his axe and said to himself, “This tree is really worth keeping. I must not fell it.”

playing near some hedges laden with berries that looked ripe and juicy. The boy’s mouth watered and he licked his chops.

At once the young boy started gathering berries. He was thinking of enjoying them at leisure. Just then he was stung sharply by a nettle. Feeling pinched, he smarted under acute pain. Soon a rash appeared on his hand.

Leaving the collection of berries, the boy ran home and told his mother everything with tearful eyes. Sobbing hard, he said “Mom, I only touched them lightly but they stung me hard.”

The mother smiled and caressing her son, replied, “They stung you because you only touched them lightly. Had you held them firmly, they won’t have hurt you. You cannot get anything without facing dangers. Every rose has some thorns to protect it. So, learn to grasp the nettles, if you want berries.”

🌸 Speak the Truth But Not Hurtfully

Jupiter, the chief of gods, was going to marry. He decided to celebrate the happy event by hosting a reception. He invited all the animals living on land and in water to participate in the banquet.

All the animals came to attend the feast but the tortoise didn’t come. Jupiter was much too surprised at his absence.

After a few days, Jupiter came across the tortoise. He asked him, “How was it that you were not present at the banquet held in honour of my marriage? Were you all right?”

“I am a stay-at-home type lf animal and never care to attend petty affairs. Why should trouble myself when there is no place like home?” retorted the tortoise.

No doubt, the tortoise had said something very true. But the way of saying it was very hurtful. It pinched the chief of gods and he uttered a curse, “So, you will always carry your home on your back. You will never be able to unload it.”

And every tortoise carries his home with him till today.

🌸The Man and The Elephant

A man sat on an elephant. He was going to the river for a bath. On the way he felt hungry. There was a coconut in his bag. “I shall eat the coconut,” said the man.

The man opened his bag. He took out the coconut. “But how shall I break it open?” he said. “It is so hard.”

The man looked around. “I know what to do,” he said. “The elephant’s head is hard too. I shall break open the coconut on the elephant’s head.”

The man lifted the coconut. He hit it hard on the elephant’s head. The coconut broke. The man ate the coconut. He was happy.

But the elephant was not happy. He was very angry. He did not like to be hit with a coconut. It had hurt him. He said, “I shall teach this selfish man a lesson.”

They came to the river. The man got down from the elephant. He had a bath in the river. Then he put on clean white clothes.

The elephant too had a bath in the river. Then he filled his trunk with muddy water. He went to the man. `Whoosh!’ He threw all the muddy water on the man. All his nice and new clothes were spoilt.

“Oh what shall I do? The man said. “All my clothes are spoilt. I am sorry I hurt the elephant. I shall never hurt him again.”

The man went to the elephant. He put his hand on the elephant’s trunk. He said, “Sorry, my friend. I shall never hurt you again.”

The elephant sat down. The man got on the elephant’s back. Then the elephant took the man home.

The elephant was not angry any more. He and the man were friends again.

🌸Much Wants More but Loses All

Once upon a time there lived a couple in a

village. They had a beautiful goose that laid a golden egg everyday. They were indeed quite well-off. But the man was not happy with what he got daily. He was a get-rich-quick type of man.

The man wanted to get all the golden eggs from his goose at one single go. So, he thought hard and at last hit upon a plan. He decided to kill the goose and get all the eggs together.

So, the next morning when the goose laid one golden egg, he caught hold of it. Taking a sharp knife, he chopped off its neck and cut its body open.

Untold was his sorrow indeed, when he got nothing—no more golden eggs. On the other hand, he stopped getting even the one golden egg everyday.

So, the man went on getting poorer and poorer day after day. And at last, he was a pauper. How unlucky and how silly in fact.

Greed is a big curse indeed.

🌸Never Grumble Over Your Lot

It was a fine day during the rainy season. A

peacock was dancing happily in a forest. Suddenly he was reminded of ugly rough voice. His face fell and tears welled up in his eyes.

Suddenly he saw a night-in-gale sitting in a nearby tree. “What a sweet voice she has got ! Everybody loves and praises it. But when I utter a sound, everyone laughs at me. Ho unlucky indeed !” lamented the peacock.

Just then appeared Juno wife of Jupiter, chief of gods. “What makes you so sad, Mr peacock ?” asked she.

“I have got such a beautiful body that all praise it. But my voice —how ugly and rough ! It is no use having this beauty,” sobbed out the peacock.

“Never grumble over your lot. God has given various gifts to several creatures—to you beauty, to the eagle strength, to the night-in-gale song, and so on. Nobody except you is unhappy.

A leopard too lived in a lair in that forest. He often saw the bulls and licked his chops. How he wanted to make them his meal indeed ! But he was afraid to go near them.

The leopard thought hard and hit upon a plan. He decided to divide them against one another. He took help from a jackal and created bad blood among the bulls. As a result, they moved away from one another.

Seeing this, the leopard attacked one bull and feasted on his flesh. Thus he was able to kill the other two as well one by one.

One hot summer day, a lion was fast asleep in

the cool shade of a big tree. A mouse lived in a nearby hole. Suddenly it came out of its hole and saw the sleeping lion.

Unmindful of the lion’s strength, the mouse was tickled by an idea. It thought of waking the lion by running over his body for fun only.

But to his bad luck, the lion seized it in his strong paw. He was going to kill it when it begged, “Spare me, sir ; I may repay your mercy some day.”

The lion was amused to hear the words of the mouse and let it go with a smile. But a few days later, the lion was caught in a hunter’s net under that very tree. So, he roared aloud.

The mouse came out of its hole to hear the roar. It was time to repay the lion’s mercy. So, it set about nibbling the cords of the net and set the lion free in no time.

“What are you doing there, Mr Fox ?” asked the goat.

“I came here to drink water. It is the best I have ever tasted. Come and see for yourself,” replied the sly fox.

Without thinking even a bit, the goat jumped into the well. She quenched her thirst and looked for a way to get out.

The fox said, “I’ve an idea. Stand on your hind legs. I’ll climb on your head and get out. Then I shall help you out too.” The silly goat did so and the fox got out of the well.

“Why after all ?” asked the fisherman.

“I am only very small now. So, I am of little use for you. But after a few days, I shall grow fairly big. You can catch me again then I shall be more useful at that time,” replied the fish.

Soon the hare felt bored. So, he stopped and began eating blades of green grass. Having had his fill, he felt sleepy. Seeing a shady bush nearby, he lay down under it. As the tortoise was quite away behind, he had no worry from his side.

As for the tortoise, he plugged along at his slow place and overtook the sleeping hare. Passing by him silently, he got to the winning point.

When the hare awoke, it was fairly late. He feared that the tortoise might have passed by him. So, he ran at break-neck speed but only to find his rival already there as a winner.

So, the fox sat down for a while to take rest. Then feeling refreshed he jumped as high as he could to get at the grapes. But alas ! the bunches were too high for him.

The fox once again rested for a while and made another bold attempt. But he failed to reach the grapes this time too. Forced to give up trying anymore, he walked away. Instead of owning his failure, he remarked with an air of dignity, “I thought those grapes to be ripe and juicy. But now I see that they must be quite sour.”

Standing on a high rock, the boy shouted at the top of his voice, “Wolf ! Wolf ! come to save me and my sheep.”

The villagers heard the shouts and ran to help him. But the boy laughed at them saying, “No wolf ; I did it for fun only.”

The villagers felt peeved and came back with an air of anger. They decided not to be fooled by him anymore.

One day as the shepherd boy was tending his sheep, a wolf really came there. Now the boy shouted—”Wolf ! Wolf !” as loudly as he could. But nobody came to help him.

🌸Fishermen story…..

Two men went fishing. One was an experienced fisherman,

the other wasn’t. Every time the experienced fisherman caught a big fish, he put it in his ice chest to keep it fresh. Whenever the inexperienced fisherman caught a big fish, he threw it back.

The experienced fisherman watched this go on all day and finally got tired of seeing the man waste good fish. “Why do you keep throwing back all the big fish you catch?” he asked.

The inexperienced fisherman replied, “I only have a small frying pan.”

Sometimes, like that fisherman,
we throw back the big plans, big dreams, big jobs, big opportunities that God gives us.
Our faith is too small.

We laugh at that fisherman who didn’t figure out that all he needed was a bigger frying pan,
yet how ready are we to increase the size of our faith?

Whether it’s a problem or a possibility,
God will never give you anything bigger than you can handle.
That means we can confidently walk into anything God brings our way.

However, they acted strangely when tied together. They both liked to go in opposite directions and walk in a different manner. Both of them would pull the other in different directions and soon this would end in a quarrel. Jowler, the male, treated Vixen, the female, badly.

He did not take care to lead Vixen properly or kindly.

An old Dog watching the two Dogs fight with each other, scolded them, “Silly Puppies, why are you always fighting with each other? Why don’t you ask what the other wants? Then you can both be at peace! I realized this when I was in the similar situation as you.”

🌸The Mice who Travelled

A Mouse, tired of living in constant fear, said to her neighbour, “I read about a place called Indies where Mice are safer. The people there believe that the soul of a Mouse has been in the body of a great person. After the Mouse dies, it will re-enter the body of another great person. That’s why Mice are treated affectionately there. Even hospitals are built for them. Let us go to this country and live happily.”

The neighbour replied, “Don’t Cats enter these hospitals? If they do, then the Mice would be dying, quickly and in great numbers.”

“Fear not,” said the first Mouse. “The Cats have their houses and hospitals far away from ours.”

The Mice then crept into a ship, which was set to sail. After a long journey, they reached Indies.

There, the Mice entered a house, expecting a warm welcome. However, the Indian Mice fought with the newly arrived Mice. Instead of being eaten up by Cats, they were killed by their own kind.

🌸Anger and Love – Emotional Mistake

While a man was polishing his new car, his 6 yr old son picked up a stone and scratched lines on the side of the car. In anger, the man took the child’s hand and hit it many times; not realizing he was using a wrench.

At the hospital, the child lost all his fingers due to multiple fractures. When the child saw his father…..with painful eyes he asked, ‘Dad when will my fingers grow back?’ The man was so hurt and speechless; he went back to his car and kicked it a lot of times. Devastated by his own actions…….sitting in front of that car he looked at the scratches; the child had written
‘LOVE YOU DAD’.

Anger and Love have no limits; choose the latter to have a beautiful, lovely life….. Things are to be used and people are to be loved. But the problem in today’s world is that, People are used and things are loved….Let’s be careful to keep this thought in mind: Things are to be used, but People are to be loved.

Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits they become character;Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

I’m glad a friend forwarded this to me as a reminder. God bless you. If you don’t share this on nothing bad will happen; if you do, you might change someones life

🌸Happiness

Once a group of 50 people was attending a seminar. Suddenly the speaker stopped and decided to do a group activity. He started giving each one a balloon. Each one was asked to write his/her name on it using a marker pen. Then all the balloons were collected and put in another room.

Now these delegates were let in that room and asked to find the balloon which had their name written, within 5 minutes. Everyone was frantically searching for their name, colliding with each other, pushing around others and there was utter chaos.

At the end of 5 minutes no one could find their own balloon.
Now each one was asked to randomly collect a balloon and give it to the person whose name was written on it. Within minutes everyone had their own balloon.

The speaker began— exactly this is happening in our lives. Everyone is frantically looking for happiness all around, not knowing where it is.

Our happiness lies in the happiness of other people. Give them their happiness; you will get your own happiness.

The Thief decided to fool the Old Man and take away his money.

“Why are you stealing fruit from my orchard?” the Thief shouted in anger at the Old Man.

“You must be mistaken,” said the Old Man. “I do not like fruits, so why should I steal from your orchard?”

“Oh stop it!” growled the Thief. Then he thought for a while and said, “Ah! Last year, you spoke bad things about me to your neighbour.”

“No! That cannot be true. I did not live in this house last year,” replied the Old Man.

“Well then, if it was not you, it certainly must have been your brother,” shouted the Thief.

“It cannot have been, for my brother died two years ago, answered the Old Man.

“Never mind, I know it was definitely an Old Man like you, I will not accept excuses anymore,” said the Thief. Then, he snatched the Old Man’s money and ran away with it.

🌸The Peacock

Before he got his beautiful tail, the Peacock was an ordinary bird, with a small bunch of feathers.

One day, the Peacock visited Juno, the Goddess of Protection. The Peacock told her that he wished to look grand and beautiful. Juno smiled. He was a good bird and she liked him.

The Peacock then described the long train of brightly coloured feathers that he wanted to trail behind him. He also wished to be the loveliest of all the birds!

To his great joy, Juno agreed.

What a wonderful tail he got! Blue and green with a jewel-like pattern, opening up like a fan when he raised it. Now the Peacock decided to walk like a king! So he held his head high and walked with style!

The common birds looked at him in surprise! Even the pretty long tailed pheasants were jealous!

After showing off his tail, the Peacock decided to fly.

The Peacock was shocked! He simply could not fly. He could take a few flying steps, but nothing more! He sadly realised that had lost a wonderful ability, simply because he had wanted to look good!

One evening, a Farmer returned home from his farm. He had left his baby asleep in the cradle. His faithful Dog was watching over the child.

When the Farmer reached the room, he saw the baby’s cradle turned upside down and blood everywhere. The baby was missing.

The Farmer understood that a beast had killed his baby. Now he was very sad and upset.

Then he saw that his Dog was lying quietly with blood on his mouth and body. The Farmer was so angry that he picked up a an axe and hit the Dog. The poor Dog cried out in pain and died.

The Farmer now rushed to the turned cradle and lifted it. His little son was perfectly safe and sleeping, peacefully!

A big, ugly Snake lay dead near the cradle.

The Farmer was shocked. He was happy that his baby was safe, but very sad that his beloved Dog was dead.

He had killed his loyal Dog without thinking. Sadly, he picked up his baby.

The Ape thought, ‘Oh! That must be honey!’

The Ape looked up. He saw high above him, a hive. He also saw that the Bees were buzzing and working together to make honey.

The Ape wished that he could climb up, break off a piece of the hive, chew it and enjoy the fresh honey! But he did not move at all. He sadly remembered, Just last week, I had tried to steal honey from the hive and the angry Bees had stung me! It was so painful!’

The Ape sighed!

A Bee flying up to the hive looked at him. The Ape asked the Bee, “How are you able to make such a sweet wonderful liquid like honey, and at the same time, carry such a horribly painful sting?”

The Bee nodded wisely and agreed, “Yes, you know our good work tastes sweet; but you must also know that when someone tries to steal it, our anger can be just as bitter!”

🌸Hospital Window

Two men, both seriously ill, occupied the same hospital room.

One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon to help drain the fluid from his lungs.
His bed was next to the room’s only window.

The other man had to spend all his time flat on his back.

The men talked for hours on end.

They spoke of their wives and families, their homes, their jobs, their involvement in the military service, where they had been on vacation.

Every afternoon, when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.

The man in the other bed began to live for those one hour periods where his world would be broadened and enlivened by all the activity and color of the world outside.

The window overlooked a park with a lovely lake.
Ducks and swans played on the water while children sailed their model boats. Young lovers walked arm in arm amidst flowers of every color and a fine view of the city skyline could be seen in the distance.

As the man by the window described all this in exquisite details, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine this picturesque scene.

One warm afternoon, the man by the window described a parade passing by.

Although the other man could not hear the band, he could see it in his mind’s eye as the gentleman by the window portrayed it with descriptive words.

Days, weeks and months passed.

One morning, the day nurse arrived to bring water for their baths only to find the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had died peacefully in his sleep.

She was saddened and called the hospital attendants to take the body away.

As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making sure he was comfortable, she left him alone.

Slowly, painfully, he propped himself up on one elbow to take his first look at the real world outside.

He strained to slowly turn to look out the window beside the bed.

It faced a blank wall.

The man asked the nurse what could have compelled his deceased roommate who had described such wonderful things outside this window.

The nurse responded that the man was blind and could not even see the wall.

She said, ‘Perhaps he just wanted to encourage you.’

Epilogue:

There is tremendous happiness in making others happy, despite our own situations.

Shared grief is half the sorrow, but happiness when shared, is doubled.
